Day 6 -- New York City! Today we played. We took an early bus to the Big Apple. Starbucks for coffee was the first stop in the sub way station. We bought a day subway pass and took off. At the American Museum of Natural History we saw the insect exhibit, Oceanic exhibit, and dinosaur exhibit. Then, we went to the Japanese exhibit and Masahiko and Yumiko explained a lot about the artifacts on display. The UN Building was a treat for Masahiko and Yumiko to see. Next, we traveled to lower Manhattan for Wall Street, the New York Stock Exchange, and Battery Park. There, we saw the memorial to WW II US military personal lost at sea and the highlight, the Statue of Liberty. We were unable to go to the island due to time restraints, too bad. But, is has been closed since 9/11. Ground Zero was a sad and somber place to be, but important. Many Japanese citizens were also killed at the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Since we needed a little cheering up, we traveled uptown again to Times Square. It was beginning to get dark and the lights were brilliant. Shopping for NYC souvenirs, candy, and food was the objective. Who can leave NYC without a Big Apple trinket?-- certainly not myself, Masahiko and Yumiko. The ride back to Pennsylvania allowed for quick naps because Masahiko and Yumiko still had to pack for their return to Tokyo. It was a fast day. Jane Freach
