This is the second year of partnership with Shiojirinishi ES on our joint river project. Last year students from BMES were able to visit the river on a monthly basis to test the water quality, look for insect and plant samples and study the pollution.
It was our intention to continue this pattern into this year as the program had already been established and was a part of school culture. However, things have a way of changing. In October, my class took a field trip to the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers. These two rivers are vital to our community and played a large role in the development in our region. While at the park students tested the water quality of both rivers, learned about the Valley Oak tree which is prevalent in our area, and saw two extremely large river otters swimming up both of the rivers. We had a great time, and ended the day with a picnic lunch in the fall sunshine and a vigorous game of Capture the Flag. We had intended for both 6th grade classes to visit the Folsom Dam in November. However, we had a difficult time getting parent drivers and only one class was able to go on the trip. They took a tour of the inside of the dam and learned how the dam impacts our watershed. In December, our 6th grade took a week long field trip to Sly Park Outdoor Education Center in the El Dorado National Forest, which is very close to the headwaters of the American River. Students learned about our local watershed, the role of the mountain range in our watershed and how rivers help to create rocks. Since January is the flood season in Sacramento, we do not have any river trips planned, however our class is beginning a study of vernal pools which are unique to our local area. These are standing pools of water created by the hardpan soil which support various plant and animal life. This study will help students better understand our local watershed. We plan a trip to the vernal pools in early March. In November, our local school board voted to close our school next year due to declining enrollment in our district. This has taken a toll on our community and to a degree impacted our ability to visit the river for study. Therefore, we have creatively found ways to address our pair project.
