McClelland Elementary School had done our Bugs Project in the fall of 2006 on a pleasant fall day. In order to get ready for the final February conference, we revisited our Bugs and Soil Project.
We conducted the Bugs and Soil Project in three different areas; an area next to the water retention pond, an area by the parking lot, and also an area in the woodchips on our playground. Each group was composed of four students for this project.
In all three areas, we found ants and lots of worms. We were thrilled to find some worms about ten centimeters long. Pill bugs were also found in all three areas.
In addition to common creatures mentioned above, a special Kumo- a spider and a moth (jitoriga) were found in the area next to the water retention pond. A cricket and a centipede were found in the playground.
The sixth graders, after our big dig, we made a bugs and insects data sheet. As examining all of the creatures we found in all three areas, we concluded that bugs like to live in wet and damp environment. We also did an extensive research the bugs and insects we found to learn of their life cycle and of their optimum environment.
